Students have a lot of things on their checklist for when they are starting college, but one thing they often forget is the need for self storage.  No matter what university you’re going to in the Salt Lake City area, you’ll probably need to look into finding a storage facility nearby to store some of the things you’ll need to bring to college.  Each student has unique storage needs based on organizations they are involved in, majors that they are pursuing, and of course, their personal hobbies.  If you’re not sure how or where to start your search for a storage facility, we can help you figure out exactly what you need—just keep reading!

Lack of Space

Every high school senior dreams of how amazing it will be to live in a dorm room with their friends, but what he/she doesn’t realize is that the precious things that are in their rooms at home won’t be able to fit into that dorm room without a struggle.  Most college students that live on campus have a need for a self storage unit, even if they may not think so at first.  It’s actually pretty easy to find storage facilities in Salt Lake City given that there are so many of them—77 to be exact.  This means that there are 42,350 storage units in the city.  Although that may seem like a lot, let’s put that into perspective.

The University of Utah has an undergraduate enrollment of about 23,907 students, of which 13% live on campus.  There are also 765 registered clubs and organizations, and 15 varsity sports teams at the school.  Looking at these numbers alone, the amount of storage units in the city are more than enough, but you have to take into account the rest of the city’s population and their storage needs as well.  In terms of seasonal needs, you’re in luck because one of the main things you’ll need a storage unit for is to store your things during summer months while you’re back home.  That’s right when people take their boats and RVs out of storage and use them the most.  But what if you’re going to study abroad for a semester starting in January and need a storage unit then?  Our advice is to plan ahead, and look around for the best storage facilities in the area.  One facility in particular that is only 0.6 miles away from campus is Storage Squad.  Because of Storage Squad’s proximity to a large university, it has gained a lot of experience in providing services to students.  They have serviced over 8,000 students and handled over 42,000 items since they have been in the business.  They also offer free boxes and free pickup and delivery, which is great for college students.  The more free stuff you can get, the more money you’ll have left over for Starbucks runs during midterms and finals!

Crime Rates and Security

We’ve already discussed proximity, so now let’s talk about security.  Salt Lake City’s extraordinary beauty gracefully masks its ugly crime rate.  The city’s annual property crime is 17,032, and it’s only safer than one percent of the cities in the U.S.  When looking for a storage facility, be sure to keep some of the following security measures in mind:  24-hour video surveillance, gated facilities, alarm systems on individual units, well lit facilities, and on site managers.  Knowing that your stuff is stored in a secure facility will give you some peace of mind when you’re off studying European History in France for half the year.

A Few More Considerations

Some other things to consider when trying to find the proper storage facility are access to your unit and the weather.  Being a college student means classes during the day and late night study sessions.  Chances are you’ll plan trips to your storage unit on a whim and not take into account what time of day it is.  Look for a storage facility that allows you to have 24-hour access to your storage unit.  This way you can get to your stuff whenever you want to and not have to change your spontaneous lifestyle.

You should also look into using climate controlled units.  There’s extremely low humidity in Salt Lake City, but it does get really hot during the summer, with temperatures commonly going over 100 degrees.  Heat can really mess with your things, especially if they’re temperature sensitive like paint or clay, so don’t risk damage to your belongings.
