What beganas a Technical School for Army Air Force Training now hosts one of the AirForce's most distinguished fighter wings, the 4th Fighter Wing.Seymour Johnson AFB was established in 1942, just five months after the USentered WWII. The base was deactivated in 1946 but reactivated in 1956 as aTactical Air Command Base. The base is named after Seymour Johnson, a citizenof Goldsboro, who as a Navy test pilot and died in a plane crash before thewar. The host unit at Seymour Johnson is the 4th Fighter Wing, whichoriginally replaced the 83d Fighter-Day Wing. The 4th Fighter Wingparticipated in the Korean War, the Cold War, the Vietnam War, and OperationDesert Storm, as well as many other military operations. The base also containsa minimum security Federal Prison facility on site that was completed in 1991.
