Kings Bay Submarine Base

Kings BaySubmarine Base is the home base for the US Atlantic's Fleet ballistic missilenuclear submarines armed with nuclear weapons. It is located in southeasternGeorgia, and 4,000 acres on base are considered protected wetlands and home toa variety of animal species. During the early 19th century, much ofwhere the base is today was southern plantations. In 1958, the US Army built amilitary ocean terminal there for emergency ammunition shipping and did not useit for active duty. Kings Bay was selected in 1976 as the location for the USsubmarine squadron, and it has been an operating submarine base ever since.When the US Navy decided to port their Trident submarines there, they underwentthe largest non-war construction program that cost $1.3 billion dollars andtook nine years to complete.
