Fort Gordon
Fort Gordonwas established in 1917 and was formerly known as Camp Gordon. It was named inhonor of John Brown Gordon, a major general in the Confederate army. In 1941,the base underwent reconstruction and took on the primary role of housingMilitary Police and prisoners of war. In 1956 it was renamed Fort Gordon andserved as a basic training facility as well as a Signal Corps training center.Now, the main focus of the base is signal intelligence, and it is the home ofthe US Army Signal Corps, which provides advancing training and specializedinstruction for special operations and civilian personnel in the military. FortGordon has approximately 30,000 military and civilian members on base.
