4 Great Places to Move to in Delaware
Want to live somewhere with mild weather, nearby beaches, and tight-knit neighborhoods? Delaware may be the state for you, whether you retire there, move there when young to establish yourself, or live there with your family.
The 2,488 square- mile state is along the mid-Atlantic coast and has fewer than a million residents. Temperatures range from the low 30s to the mid 70s. If you’re considering moving to Delaware, here are four great communities.
Hockessin
With 13,500 residents, Hockessin is the largest city on this list. As is often the case with a town this size, there is a sense of community and you’re bound to know most of your neighbors. There’s also a sense of community ownership, as this town has many locally owned businesses. You’ll find stores like The Gift Horse, Everything but the Kitchen Sink, Casual Marketplace, and Wild Birds Unlimited.
This is a good place to make a great living as well. The median family income is $123,700. Housing prices and rent are a little high, but reasonable considering income levels, with the median home price at $431,000 and the average rent at $1,430. Crime is reasonably low, at 58 on the crime index, which means it’s safer than 58 percent of U.S. cities.
North Star
Though located in Delaware, North Star is often seen as a suburb of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It has a small population of just 8,000, so it feels socially cozy, yet homes tend to be large and have plenty of green space between them.
The median income is a staggering $143,000, and homes are comparatively affordable, averaging around $435,000. The median rental price is $1,750, and 98% of the population lives in owned homes.. As far as crime goes, it’s low; North Star gets a crime index score of 71.
There are plenty of unique adventures to be had nearby. Visit the Wilmington & Western Railroad or White Clay Creek State Park.
Pike Creek
Another suburb of Philadelphia, Pike Creek is a diverse town of about 8,000 people. The median household income is lower than other places on this list, but is still strong at $106,000, but the median home price is significantly cheaper at $297,000, and average rent is $1,040.
Pike Creek is also close to White Clay State Park. And, if you live here, you might want to visit Middle Run Valley Natural Area, considered a great place to go hiking by locals, or Carousel Park & Equestrian Center if you love horses.

Rehoboth Beach
This is a premium place to live, if you can afford it, and many retirees with the means do live here. You’ll find an older population, with the median age at 65 years.
Rehoboth Beach is known for its amazing sunrises and sunsets. You can go for a walk, enjoy the beach weather, and do some shopping at Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk, take your kids or grandchildren to Funland, a local amusement park, or cool off at Jungle Jim’s, the local water park.
The population is low at barely 1,220. The median household income is $86,000, and the median price of a home is quite high at $880,000.
