Travis Air Force Base
Travis AFBis an Air Force Base under the command of Air Mobility Command (AMC). Locatednear the San Francisco Bay, the base handles more cargo and passengers throughits airport than any other military terminal in the US, earning the name\"Gateway to the Pacific.\" There are approximately 7,260 active militarypersonnel on base. The host unit is the 60th Air Mobility Wing, thelargest wing in the Air Force AMC. The base is named after Brigadier GeneralRobert F Travis, an Air Force officer who served during WWII. He died in anaircraft crash while commanding a B-29 Superfortress en route to Guam thatcontained an atomic bomb. The Jimmy Doolittle Air & Space Museum is alsolocated on the base and houses one of the largest collections of militaryaircraft on the Western Coast.
