Norfolk Naval Shipyard
NorfolkNaval Shipyard is a Navy facility for building, remodeling, and repairing the Navy'sships and is the US Navy's oldest and largest industrial facility. It wasfounded in 1767 under the control of the British but was soon taken over by theAmerican government. From 1917 and on, the shipyard has been used for thehomeport of stationed ships as well as their repair and construction. DuringWWI, it was expanded to accommodate 11,000 new employees and their families anddoubled again during WWII. Today, it is used primarily for repair andmodernization of current ships, servicing everything from submarines toamphibious vessels, but focusing on nuclear ships. They are one of the onlybases on the east coast where nuclear ships can dock and receive support.
