Spring Cleaning 101

Mia Iverson | March 21, 2011 @ 5:26 PM

Spring is finally here! It’s time to pack up your winter parka and snow-trodden boots and break out the basketball, tennis racket and hiking shorts. But if you’re like any average American, you know how difficult it can be to store your winter wagonload. Here are a few tips when it comes to packing up the old and dusting off the new: First things first, clean your clothes. The last thing you’ll want is pests doing harm to your clothes. Stains, food, and dirt attract the dirty little buggers. I recommend dry cleaning (high heat) or giving your clothes a hard wash. Secondly, you’ll need to figure out your packing solution. If you can, avoid cardboard boxes and paper bags, as they allow bugs easy access to your clothes. Use plastic trash bags or plastic storage bins and line with acid free tissue. Avoid moth balls for long term storage and go with cedar chips or rosemary sachets. Third, pay attention to how you pack your clothes. Avoid hanging knitted items for they will be misshapen and malformed when you take them out of storage. Pack your heaviest items on bottom and your lightest items on top. Furthermore, pack loosely to allow air to circulate throughout your wardrobe. Are you in the market for plastic storage? Try Target, Wal-Mart, or The Container Store. Cedar chips can be found at your local Whole Foods or any pet store and fragrant sachets at Whole Foods, Michael’s or any craft store. Want more storage tips?
