Using Self Storage When Remodeling Your Home

Remodeling a home can be an exciting prospect. Perhaps you plan to enlarge your kitchen, add a bathroom, or redo the living room.

There are so many possibilities. Once you have the funds together and are ready to undertake the project, you’ll be left with one question. During the remodel, where do you put your things that belong in that space?

Rent a self storage unit. Something in the range of a 5x5 or 5x10 will work best for most rooms. If you’re remodeling a wing of your home, then a 10x10 to a 10x20 may be what’s needed. Keep most of the things that belong in your kitchen, including the fridge and oven, in your unit. Then, when the kitchen is finished and it’s time to remodel the bedroom, bring the kitchen items back home and move your bed, mattresses, dresser, and so on to the unit.

If you’re redoing your entire home, depending on the size of your home, you’ll probably need to rent a 10x15 or larger unit. The idea would be to have a storage unit where you could keep most of your belongings for the few months it takes to renovate your entire home.

Aside from helping to keep your home free of clutter during a remodel, self storage offers other advantages.

The rental price per month, per square foot of storage space is cheaper than the rent on the same amount of space in a house or apartment. In other words, it’s quite affordable.

Depending on where you live, you may want to rent a unit with climate control. This adds between 30% and 50% to the price, but this will help keep your belongings in great shape. Attics and basements are both prone to cold, dry conditions, or hot, humid conditions, both of which can damage your belongings, inviting in mold and mildew, warping wood and metal, and so on. Climate control prevents such damage.

A Few Tips

When you box items for storage, label each box. We also suggest you keep an inventory sheet. This can be extremely helpful if you need to retrieve that special salad bowl or any other important item that you boxed up for storage.

Since you’ll be using self storage on a temporary bases, in order to facilitate your remodeling project, you will likely put items into storage that you’ll need to retrieve from time to time. Put those items close to the door, so it’s easy to get to them.
