Boston, MA

We start on the East Coast, in one of the biggest educational centers in the U.S. Boston is home to Boston University, UMASS Boston, Harvard Medical School, Harvard Business School, and Berklee College of Music. As the city is full of well-educated intellectuals, it makes sense that companies looking for smart workers would set up shop here.

This is an especially great place to live and work if you’re in the healthcare field, with facilities like Massachusetts General Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital being major employers.

The average salary in Boston is $71,000. Keep in mind though that the average price of a home is $625,000, and the average rental for a one bedroom place is about $2,800, so it goes without saying that you’ll want to factor the cost of living into your salary requirements.

Los Angeles, CA

If you want a shot at getting in the entertainment industry, Los Angeles is the place to be. Many actors and performers get their start here, but it’s also a great place for visual effects artists, stunt artists, and the like. Of course, many people work in other industries. Theme parks are big employers in the general area. Health care is also a great industry to get into here, as is law enforcement. There’s plenty to do, so people enjoy a good work-life balance.

The average salary is $62,600, while the median home value is $683,600. A one bedroom apartment will set you back about $2,100 per month. The weather is generally warm, and hot in the summer. Winters get cool, but rarely very cold.

Miami, FL

Construction, real estate, manufacturing, and tourism are all huge in Miami, ensuring plenty of jobs in a variety of fields. It’s also sunny year-round and a great place to enjoy the beach during your time off.

In Miami, the average salary is about $52,500 per year. The average rental is relatively reasonable, however, at $1,450 for a one bedroom place. Home values average $335,000.

San Diego, CA

Another great city for people in healthcare is San Diego. After all, this is the home of Kaiser Permanente and Sharp HealthCare. In addition to their facilities, you’ll also find UC San Diego Health centers, Kindred Hospital, Rady Children’s Hospital, and the Psychiatric Hospital of San Diego County, so there are many job opportunities in this field.

The average salary in San Diego is $61,000. The median home value is $630,000, while the average rental price for a one bedroom place is $1,800. It’s a nice tourist destination, so there’s plenty to do, like visit SeaWorld San Diego or the San Diego Zoo, and the weather is warm most of the year.

San Jose, CA

If you’re a tech person, there may be no better place to work in the U.S. than San Jose, at the heart of Silicon Valley. It’s the home of huge tech companies that offer their workers high pay and great benefits. These include Apple, Cisco, Facebook, Google, Silicon Graphics, Sun Microsystems, and more.

Salaries vary widely. For example, a customer service representative will make a decent living, but a computer programmer will make a lot more. Still, the average annual salary is $84,000. Homes are expensive, with the median value at about $950,000, while a one bedroom apartment rents for about $2,400 per month. Weather is pleasant year-round, and there are plenty of great restaurants, museums, and more. If you want to visit the beach, Santa Cruz is a beautiful city about an hour away.
