Christmas is over, which means you’ll need to put your ornaments away. Make sure you do it in a way that protects those little treasures.

How to Store Your Ornaments

Whether you store your ornaments in a closet or garage at home, or in a self storage unit, you can keep them safe so that next year, you won’t find them broken or even moldy.

If you live in an area with large temperature fluctuations or humidity—basically, most of the United States—get a unit with climate control. This will add about 30% to the price, but will protect your items from mold, mildew, warping, and pests.

Keep your ornaments in special cases such as this ornament storage cube, or a similar one made of strong fabric that breathes. If you keep them in plastic bins, wrap them carefully in newspaper pages, and include some moisture-absorbing packets in the bins, such as silica gel desiccants.

Other decorations, such as manger sets, may have parts that fit in an ornament storage cube. If not, wrap these in newspaper and store them, carefully, in a strong cardboard box. Plastic boxes don’t breathe as well as cloth or paper-based boxes, and can trap in moisture.

Carry the boxes carefully and if you’re keeping them in a self storage unit, store them at least two inches off the ground, on pallets or shelves.
