Torrance, CA University Storage

As exciting as it is to move out for college, it can be kind of difficult leaving everything behind.  You’re moving out of your home for the first time and everything that’s to come is unknown.  You may have heard about the size of the dorm rooms; believe people when they say how small they are.  When you’re packing your bags for college and you want to take everything you own, you should consider storing your things in self storage.  Torrance has a massive student population because of its location in southern California, but it can accommodate everyone because there are 25 storage facilities that you can choose from to store your stuff.

Students and Storage

Torrance is home to California State University Dominguez Hills, which has an undergraduate enrollment of 12,617, a graduate enrollment of 2,070, and covers 346 acres of land.  There are 80 registered clubs and organizations on campus, and more than 100 majors are offered.  On top of that, there are graduate programs, and certificate and credential programs, which people might be enrolled in while working full time.

Torrance’s 13,750 storage units are more than enough to fulfill storage needs of all the students attending the university.  However, you have to remember that there are also a lot of other people (military personnel, businesses, and residents) in the area who are competing for these units.  Be sure to find a unit quickly before they’re all gone.  There are actually some facilities that are very close to the university that would be great places to store your stuff. Door to Door Storage and Moving is a facility that’s only 1.1 miles away from campus.  You can get moving and storage services in one place, which makes moving day a lot easier.  This facility also gives you the option to load containers at the storage facility, or you can have them bring storage containers to you and have a week to load the containers before they pick them up.  This way you don’t have to do all of the moving by yourself.  Another great thing about this facility is that to date, they haven’t had a break-in and the company has been in business for 20 years now.  We highly recommend this facility based on its amenities, safety, and proximity to campus.

Keeping Your Stuff Safe

Torrance is a relatively safe city, but that doesn’t mean that there’s no crime.  Torrance has annual property crimes of 2,767 and is safer than 39% of the cities in the U.S.  That’s pretty good considering how close it is to downtown Los Angeles.  However, you should take security into account when choosing a storage facility.  Some of the security measures that storage facilities offer include the following:  24-hour video surveillance, gated and well-lit facilities, on site managers, security guards, and individually alarmed units.  Try to find a facility with as many of these security measures as possible so you’re not worried about your things while you’re home for the summer or studying abroad.

Money and Flexibility

Paying for college is hard enough as it is without having to pay for a storage unit on top of that.  Storage units are actually not that expensive, and facilities usually offer student discounts and back to school specials, especially if they’re very close to a college campus.  You can also ask the manager if he/she allows for you to share a unit with a friend.  That way you can cut the cost and still get all of the benefits of self storage.

You should also sign up for online bill pay.  Whether you’re going on vacation, studying abroad for the semester, or are just swamped with studying for midterms or finals, you don't want to be stressed about making a trip to the storage facility to pay your bill.  With online bill pay, you can make your payments from anywhere, any time.

Lastly, be sure to look for a facility that allows for 24-hour access to your unit.  Although you can easily find a facility close to campus, it might be hard to make a trip to your unit between classes.  Given how unpredictable student schedules are, it only makes sense to opt for the most flexible access hours.

What the Weather can do to Your Things

California has a pretty dry climate, so you don’t have to worry too much about humidity.  However, Torrance is very close to the ocean, so it’s definitely possible for it to get a little humid on hot summer days.  To avoid any damage to your belongings, we recommend using a climate controlled unit.  This way you can store anything you want—including items that have or are made of wood, metal, paint, etc.—without having to fear damage due to weather conditions.
