5 Great Places to Move To in Nevada

Jon Fesmire | March 23, 2020 @ 9:00 AM

Want to live in a state with nearly 300 days of sunshine a year? Then Nevada may be the place for you. The countryside boasts a variety of landscapes with deserts and mountains, plus beautiful Lake Tahoe, woodsy Great Basin, and more. There are plenty of places to hike, plenty of lakes to swim and fish in, cliff faces to climb, plus places to ski and snowboard. The weather in Nevada can vary over the course of the year, so if you need a storage unit, we recommend one with climate control.

If you want to try your luck at a casino, you can do a little gambling, too. Just don’t overdo it! The odds are always in the house’s favor.

If this sounds like a fun life to you, check out these five great places to move to in Nevada.

Incline Village

One would be hard pressed to find a more perfect name for this town. Set on the shore of Lake Tahoe (hence the “Incline” for the ski slopes) and with a population of about 9,000 (hence “Village”), this lovely town is ideal for nature lovers. In their spare time, residents make time for fishing, skiing, and boating. Enjoy the shade of the Nevada pines while taking a hike around town.

This is primarily a town of slightly older Americans who have made good progress in their job fields. The median age in Incline Village is 49. Median household income is a nice $82,000, while the median home price is around $885,000. Considering this, rent is surprisingly low, averaging $1,400 for a 950 square foot place. You’ll feel safe in Incline Village as well, as the crime rate is 59% lower than the national average.

Reno

There are many advantages to living in Reno, not least of which is its location. This bold city sits beside the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, three hours from one of the most beautiful places to visit in the world, Yosemite National Park. Residents can easily go camping in Yosemite a few times a year to enjoy all the hiking and enjoyment of the natural world that the park has to offer.

There’s lots to do in this city of about 250,000 residents, including big events. These include concerts, rodeos, and more. Parents will be glad to know there are more than 70 public schools for their kids. Also, with the median household income at $46,500, the average rent of $1,250, and the median home price of $386,000, don’t look too shabby.

Gardnerville

Looking for a more quiet place to live where there are still plenty of restaurants, parks, and entertainment options? You may simply prefer a calmer lifestyle in a beautiful area, or you may be looking for somewhere to move when you retire. Either way, Gardnerville is a good choice.

Plus, the schools in Gardnerville are highly rated, so it’s a nice place to raise a family. Gardnerville has a small-town feel with its population of about 6,000. The median home price is around $410,000, the average rent for a 650 square foot apartment is $840, and the median household income is nearing $50,000. The town does skew conservative, with the average age at 48.

Henderson

Las Vegas is an exciting, but crazy city. If you want to be able to visit the Strip, but don’t want to live too close to it, consider moving to Henderson. This city of 302,000 is next to Las Vegas, but has a more relaxed atmosphere. You can enjoy the natural world here, with more than 80 miles of nature trails.

Considering the median household income of $64,000, Henderson is quite affordable. The median home price is $366,000, and the average rent is $1,325 for a big 1,000 square foot place. Plus, the poverty rate is just 9%, 39% lower than the national average.

Sparks

If Reno itself seems too busy to you, but you’d like to be close to that big-city life, consider the suburb of Sparks. This beautiful suburb has a population of about 101,000, but the pace of life is fairly relaxed. It’s close to both Pyramid Lake and the Sierra Nevada Mountains, so you can enjoy plenty of the outdoor activities that make Nevada so attractive. Plus, there are tons of local restaurants, casinos, and other entertainment options.

Sparks is a good place to retire, a small city where most people own their homes. The schools are also ranked third in the state. Home prices there are rising and stand at about $355,000, while the average rent is $1,380 for a 910 square foot apartment. The median household income is about $53,500, enough to live a comfortable life.
