Climate

The Gulf Stream paired with the ocean in the east, has a strong effect on the southeastern coastal areas of the state. Consequently, it also causes the possibility of hurricanes near the Chesapeake Bay. However, hurricanes are rarely a threat further inland.

The western part of the state is a frequent visitor of thunderstorms. Virginia has an annual average of 35–45 days of thunderstorm activity, and an average annual precipitation of 42.7 inches. In the mountains, significant snowfall is expected in the winter. The interaction of all these weather elements with the state’s topography creates distinct microclimates in the Shenandoah Valley, the mountainous southwest, and the coastal plains. Virginia also averages seven tornadoes annually.
