Maryland has the highest median household income of any state, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Much of the economy is built around the government agencies in the nation’s capital. White–collage technical and administrative workers make up 25 percent of the state’s labor force, which is one of the highest in the country.

There are also many educational and medical research institutions in the state. John Hopkins University is the largest single employer in the Baltimore area. Maryland is home to the third–oldest college in the U.S., St. John’s College, and 18 other private colleges and universities. John Hopkins is the most prominent, and the University of Maryland, College Park, is the largest public university. The United States Naval Academy is located in the state capital, Annapolis.

Entertainment

With two major cities, Maryland is well represented in professional sports with two NFL teams, the Baltimore Ravens and Washington Redskins; two Major League Baseball teams, the Baltimore Orioles and Washington Nationals; and the NHL’s Washington Capitals and the NBA’s Washington Wizards both play in D.C.
