Climate

Maine experiences a humid, continental climate with warm, humid summers. Winters are cold and snowy throughout the state, and are especially severe in northern parts of Maine. Daytime highs are generally in the 75–80 degrees Fahrenheit range throughout the state in July, with overnight lows in the high 50s. January temperatures range from highs near 32 degrees Fahrenheit on the southern coast, to overnight lows below 0 degrees Fahrenheit in the far north.

Maine has fewer days of thunderstorms than any other state east of the Rockies. Tornadoes are also rare, averaging less than two per year.

Recreation

Moosehead Lake is the largest lake in New England, as Lake Champlain is located between Vermont and New York. Machias Seal Island and North Rock are located on Maine’s easternmost point, and are claimed by both the U.S. and Canada. The easternmost area is the Old Sow, the largest tidal whirlpool in the Western Hemisphere.

Residents and tourists enjoy the rock–bound coast, lighthouses, beaches, fishing villages, offshore islands, including the Isles of Shoals, straddling the New Hampshire border. Prominent glacial features formed at the end of the last ice age. Somes Sound and Bubble Rock are among them, and these features have also made it attractive for boat builders, including Hinckley Yachts. Areas under protection and management of the National Park Service include: Acadia National Park near Bar Harbor, Appalachian National Scenic Trail, Roosevelt Campobello International Park near Lubec, and Saint Croix Island International Historic Site at Calais.
